Fashion: How To Look Expensive On A Budget – Fall/Winter Edition 2021

Ahh the cool breeze is finally here! Layering season is upon us and today I will share with you my tips on how to look expensive while staying within budget for the fall and winter months ahead. Now of course the “budget” will vary based on your current life situation. Me personally, I think I’m middle class. Meaning: Yes, I have some luxury items however I deffo dabble in my fair share of fast fashion. A look is a look! And we all know style is about what you can do – not always what you have! Let’s get into it 😉

I’ve compiled a list of items I believe could easily elevate your outfit to give a more expensive look. These include:

  • Blazer
  • Leather Pants
  • Neutral Tones
  • Boots
  • Structured winter coat
  • Sustainable handbag

Blazer

The beauty of a good blazer is it takes a simple look from drab to fab! Luckily for us, a blazer can be worn every season so this staple will be one to invest in as you’ll get your moneys worth (SIS, we are repeating clothes okay!) Currently, this phase of oversized blazer trend- dad style, literally 1-3 sizes sizes above your standard fit- is the reigning trend. However, a classic, tailored fit will always be in.

Styling Tip: Pair with a fitted sweater/turtleneck for a sharp look, or with a hoodie or midi dress for street style vibe.

Budget Tip: Try trifting in order to avoid spending so much money. Find a good piece and have it tailored for a custom fit.

Leather Pants

There’s something about leather that just exudes luxury. In fact, this is my weak point as I am a sucker for leather pants. Cropped, long, high-waisted, bring it on! Think about it, in the movie “The Matrix” how many looks were served? The answer is: ALOT! Leather pants can be worn with anything so this will also give you multiple wears for your money.

Check out some examples of styles I’m into below. As far as cost: the better the quality, the more expensive the item so have your wallets ready if you’re looking for a timeless piece.

Budget Tip: ZARA, Topshop makes affordable entry level quality leather pants each season.

Neutral Colors

The subject is as simple as stated. Although colors are great during spring/summer, during fall winter months neutral based tones keep things aesthetically pleasing on the eyes. Black, greys, off white/creams, beiges, camels, khaki – these are my go to tones. You’ll always be able to mix and match these items with the existing pieces in your wardrobe.

Styling Tip: Mix in silhouettes (fitted + loose), also go for a monochromatic look.

Boots

One of the 1st things most people notice in others is their footwear so why not give them a show? For me, coat season and boot season go hand in hand. When deciding what will be best for you, there are a few things to be considered such as shapes, texture, heel height, and comfort. Square toe and pointed toe trend has been holding on strong for some seasons now and frankly I don’t think that’ll be endings soon (yay!). As far as texture, smooth leather or some animal print for a pop will get you the attention you crave.

Budget Tips: ASOS, ZARA, Mango, & Topsop – check these popular stores for options as they often replicate the latest designer trends.

Structured Coat

This is the item I look forward to wearing every season. If you’re on a budget, the key factor will be to buy a piece that can be styled atop your regular wardrobe. I prefer structured items as they tend to look more expensive than their slouchy counterparts. Here are some styles that I am in to.

Budget Tips: Mango, Zara, ASOS, Topshop – check these stores for stylish affordable pieces.

Styling Tips: Pair with tailored pants to elevate the look even nore.

Sustainable Handbag

The final section of my tip sheet. A handbag is an important accessory that will tie together your look to give you that ultimate rich bish vibes. I always opt for a unique shape if I am going to venture outside the traditional square/rectangle. Personally, I’ve tried to cut back on all fast fashion bags and go for high quality bags that I know will last me a while and serve it’s purpose.

Budget Tips: I suggest high street stores such as ZARA, Mango, as places you can check out for affordable bags that will last you. Alos visit stores like Farfetch, Intermix, Selfridges for mid-high level longer lasting brands.
