Things to do in London: “Gaia” at the Old Royal Naval College

The journey to explore London continues and today I visited the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. Over the last 2 years I’ve found that many areas in SE London have incredible naval history attached to it (some even dating back to the Tudor Era). Most of these places have been turned into museums or declared a historical landmarks, while some have been converted into a living or shopping space. The Old Royal Naval College indeed became a historical landmark and for a limited time (30th May- 1st July) the “Gaia” by artist Luke Jerram is to be shown in the famous Painted Hall.

I was first captivated by this stunning piece when I first saw photos floating about on social media, I knew immediately I had to experience it in person. Cleverly dubbed #earthartwork, the piece is a suspended globe of the earth, which constantly spins in a slow motion as classical music plays in the background. The beauty of this piece is not just in the intricate details given to its form, but the equally impressive room it occupies. The Painted Hall, a Baroque masterpiece known as Britain’s Sistine Chapel, was the perfect venue to combine renaissance art with modern technology. Both sites were definitely a pleasure for me to see and sparked my love for the arts and architecture even more. Check out my gallery below to view the images I captured during my visit. Stay safe
